William A. Swain, age 86 of Batesville, died Saturday, March 18, 2023 at St. Andrew’s Health Campus. Born June 8, 1936 in Hancock County Indiana, he is the son of Louise (Nee: Gressell) and Charles Swain. He married Wanda Lee Deffner July 26, 1958, at Holy Family Church in Oldenburg and she preceded him in death on September 16, 2004. Bill served in the army between the Korean and Vietnam wars. For 41 years he owned Swain Drainage Corporation, retiring in 2004.
Bill served on several organizations including the Ripley County Water Conservation Board including a term as Chairman; past President and board member for the Indiana Land Improvement Contractors Association; board member and past President of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church Council; past President of the St. Elizabeth Home and former member of the Decatur County Community Foundation.
He is survived by his daughter Cheryl Swain of Napoleon; son Gary Swain of Oldenburg; sister Linda Pulskamp of Batesville; seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren with two more on the way. In addition to his wife and parents, he is also preceded in death by his sister Mary Gretchen Weigel.
Visitation is Friday, March 24th from 9 – 11 a.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home. Funeral services follow at 11 a.m. with Rev. Mike Chowning officiating. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery.
