Virginia Mae Smith, 87

Virginia Mae Smith (Zimmer), 87 of Batesville, Indiana, passed away Thursday, February 29th, 2024 at Aspen Place in Greensburg, IN.

She was born on October 17, 1936 to Walter and Mary (Weil) Zimmer. Growing up on a farm, she loved animals and gardening. She graduated from Sunman High School in 1955.

Virginia met and married the love of her life, Leslie on August 3, 1956, which she would tell you was a very hot day.

Virginia, also known as Ginny, was a stay at home mom while her children were in school. Her house was the house where all the neighborhood kids would gather. Besides her children, she also babysat several other kids. Once her kids were getting older, she went to work part-time at Public Service/Duke Energy in the evenings. She retired in 1996 after a battle of Non Hodgkins Leukemia.

Virginia was a lifelong member of the Batesville United Methodist Church. If you couldn’t find her at home, she has most likely at church. She taught Sunday School & Vacation Bible School and served many committees. She spent 26 years working the famous “Turkey Supper” and her passion was making the Crismon ornaments. She had many lifelong friendships with lots of laughter. She was always getting phone calls from her church family to help and she would never say no, especially when Rev. Charles Flory was on the other end.

She was all about her family. She never missed her children’s sporting events; running them and their friends to school activities. She loved to cook, keep her house in order and visit with her friends especially at the local McDonald’s for a Diet Coke and burger.

She especially loved being Mamau to her granddaughter. She would tell everyone who would listen about her beautiful red headed granddaughter.

When Les retired in 1998, they spent countless hours traveling the US with friends and family. She especially enjoyed a week at Disney World with her granddaughter and family and got to experience her first hurricane.

Virginia is survived by her husband Leslie Smith, her son Michael Smith, her daughter Beth Smith (PJ Weisenbach); and her granddaughter Stephanie Smith of Chicago, IL. Brother, Ralph Zimmer, sister-law-law Judy Smith, and numerous nieces, nephews & great-nieces and nephews.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Mary Zimmer, brother and sister-in law Wilbur and Edith (Smith) Zimmer, brother-in-law Paul Smith, nephew Darren Zimmer and Heather (Braun) Wells.

Visitation to celebrate her life will be Wednesday, March 6, 2024 from 4pm to 7pm at Meyers Funeral Home in Batesville, IN.
