Virginia Ann Garvey (née Kelly), 93, of Greensburg, passed away on April 22, 2020 of natural causes in Lake Bluff, Illinois. Born August 17, 1926 in Westport, Indiana, the youngest child of George and Zue Kelly, Ginny was a lifelong resident of Decatur County. She graduated from Greensburg High School in 1944 and from Butler University in 1948, where she was a proud member of Alpha Chi Omega.
After graduating from Butler, Ginny married her high school sweetheart, Richard H. Garvey, on June 11, 1949. Dick and Ginny returned to Greensburg, where they embarked upon their careers and lovingly raised their three children: Greg, Brad, and Ann.
Ginny taught physical education and English at Greensburg Community Schools for over 40 years, where she also enjoyed coaching cheerleading and directing the Follies. Her love of teaching touched many of her students, and she appreciated when they would stop her on the street years later to say hello and reminisce about their time in her class.
Following her retirement from teaching, she remained involved in the community as a member of the Historical Society of Decatur County, Decatur County Retired Teachers, Give and Take Garden Club, It’s About Thyme, Delta Kappa Gamma, and W.E. Women Educators. In her spare time, Ginny enjoyed collecting antiques, working in her garden, and spending time with her family and dear friends.
She is the beloved mother of Gregory (Maretta) Garvey of Greer, South Carolina, Bradford (Earlene) Garvey of Colleyville, Texas, and Ann (Jon) Meulbroek of Lake Bluff, Illinois; devoted Gigi to her grandchildren Kevin (Diana) Garvey, Megan Pratt, Elizabeth Meulbroek, and Tess Meulbroek; and great-grandmother to Michael Garvey. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and sisters, Barbara (George) Blare and Marjorie (Jack) Farr.
