The following are Tuesday, February 1 girls sectional basketball recaps from sites of area interest. More details will be added to each as they become available, so please check back. Full stories from our broadcast games will appear in other posts.
East Central came from behind to advance in 4A Sectional 14 at Bloomington North. The Trojans trailed for most of the game against Columbus North but overtook the Bull Dogs in the fourth quarter and won 41-38. Free throws were key as the Trojans made 12-of-17 while the Bull Dogs connected on just 5-of-12.
Laney Baker scored a dozen points to lead EC which included a 7-of-9 effort at the stripe. Josie Trabel netted 11 while Hope Fox logged eight.
Lauren Barker bucketed four triples and tallied 19 points in the loss for C-North. Kayla Jones picked up nine points, four boards and four steals while Kylah Lawson had a team-best nine caroms to go along with six points.
Columbus East easily defeated the host Cougars in the other 4A-14 game, 80-42.
Weather permitting, the #8 and 18-3 Olympians will meet 7-14 Martinsville in game one Friday at 6 pm while the #11 and 20-4 Trojans will take on 5-18 Bloomington South in game two around 7:30 pm.
Oldenburg fell late to Rising Sun in 1A Sectional 60 at Waldron. The Twisters led for much of the contest but couldn’t hang on in the fourth quarter and lost 44-39.
Unofficial stat leaders included, for Rising Sun, Jenna Peelman with 21 points and 14 rebounds plus 14 points and 10 boards from Alyssa Simpson. For Oldenburg, Ellie Ryan logged 15 points and eight caroms. Kate Weber scored 11.
OA ends the year at 8-14. The 10-13 Shiners move on to the 6 pm semi on Friday (weather permitting) to face the host and top-ranked 20-1 Mohawks.
And at 3A Sectional 29, Franklin County was defeated by Rushville 47-34. The Lions led 21-8 at halftime and hit 12-of-15 free throws on the night. While the Cats had a plus-12 advantage on the glass, the Lions shot better hitting 15-of-37 while FC was just 11-of 41.
Briley Munchel for Rushville hit a trio of 3-point baskets on her way to 15 points. Teammates Leonie Boyer scored 11 while Lexi Morris and Sophia Dora added seven each. Dora had five rebounds as well. Annika Marlow only put in two points but had a team-best eight boards and five assists.
Franklin County was 10-of-19 at the line. Kassidy Schell had a dozen points and seven rebounds to head the Wildcat scoring list. Jenna Bruns amassed 10 points, six assists and five boards. And Alex Gillman followed with six points and five caroms.
The Wildcats end their season at 11-13. The 15-9 Lions move on to Friday’s 6 pm semifinal (weather permitting) to face 5-17 South Dearborn.
