Sunman residents get a hearing on ‘barrel house’ proposal

Sunman, In. — The Indiana Department of Environmental Management has agreed to schedule a hearing for resident s in the Sunman area regarding the proposed barrel aging operation at the former Deufol site.

MGP Ingredients has received a tax abatement from the town council and has announced formal plans to begin the operation.

Residents have expressed concerns about a fungus that grows as a result of evaporating ethanol. The black fungus will coat surfaces like houses and cars. Some fear property values could take a hit. The fungus, Baudoinia compniacensis, is documented in other distillery locations in Scotland and Ireland.

The meeting will be held Thursday, February 28 at 5:30 p.m. at the Milan High cafetorium.

IDEM has now agreed to hold a public meeting about MGPI’s permit request. Public information officer Barry Sneed tells Eagle Country 99.3 it will take place Thursday, February 28 at 5:30 p.m. at Milan High School’s cafetorium.
