The Pacers rallied to beat the New York Knicks 138-135 in overtime in Game One of the Eastern Conference finals at Madison Square Garden in a contest heard last night on the Sports Voice. Indiana trailed by 14 points with under three minutes remaining in regulation, but Aaron Nesmith brought the Pacers back with a flurry of three-pointers. Andrew Nembhard hit the winning shot with 26 seconds left in the extra period. Tyrese Haliburton led the Blue and Gold with 31 points and 11 assists, while Nesmith added 30 points. Game Two is tomorrow night in New York.
Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay died yesterday. Irsay, who had led the team since 1997, battled health issues in recent years. During his ownership, the Colts won 10 division titles, two AFC championships, and won the franchise’s fourth overall NFL title with a victory in Super Bowl XLI. Jim Irsay was 65.
NFL owners, meeting in Eagan, Minnesota, voted down a proposal to ban the so-called “tush push” or “Brotherly Shove” popularized by the Philadelphia Eagles. The motion to ban the rugby scrum-like short yardage play reportedly failed by two votes.
The Pirates beat the Reds 3-1 in Pittsburgh in a game heard yesterday afternoon on WRBI. With the win, the Pirates win the three game series. The Reds are off today before starting a big Memorial Day weekend series tomorrow night at home against the NL Central-leading Chicago Cubs.
The Reds have optioned pitcher Chase Petty to Triple-A Louisville. In a corresponding move, the club activated right handed pitcher Ian Gibaut from the 15-day injured list. The team also activated left handed pitcher Sam Moll from the 15-day IL and optioned him to Louisville.
Roger Penske has fired the president of Team Penske IndyCar operations, Tim Cindric, and some other key organization officials. Also departing are IndyCar managing director Ron Ruzewski and IndyCar general manager Kyle Moyer. The move to fire Cindric and the others came two days after a pair of Team Penske drivers were sent to the back of the Indy 500 starting grid after failing inspections.
