Chase Burns made his Major League debut, and the Reds walked off the New York Yankees 5-4 in 11 innings last night at Great American Ball Park in a game heard on WRBI. Burns allowed three runs and six hits with no walks and eight strikeouts while throwing 81 pitches (53 for strikes). He’s the first starting pitcher in at least the Expansion Era (since 1961) to strike out his first five batters faced in his MLB debut, according to Elias Sports Bureau. The Reds rallied for three runs in the 7th inning to tie it, before the Bronx Bombers went ahead with a run in the top of the 11th. Spencer Steer tied the game in the bottom of the 11th when he drove in Matt McLain. Gavin Lux’s pinch hit single scored Elly De La Cruz from third base with the winning run. Connor Phillips notched his first win of the year. Mark Leiter, Jr. took the loss. The Reds have won the first two games in the series and three straight overall. They’ll go for the series sweep tonight when they send Brady Singer to the mound. He’ll be opposed by Yankees lefthander Max Fried. Coverage begins at 6:40 on 103.9 FM.
INF/OF Garrett Hampson has been claimed off waivers by the St. Louis Cardinals. The Reds designated Hampson for assignment on Sunday when OF Rece Hinds was recalled from Triple-A Louisville.
Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton had successful surgery on his torn Achilles on Monday. Haliburton suffered the injury during Game Seven of the NBA Finals. Now he begins a long road to recovery which could last anywhere between eight and 12 months. This means Haliburton will miss most if not all of next season.
The Indiana Fever knocked off the host Seattle Storm 94-86 in WNBA action last night. Aliyah Boston led all scorers with 31 points. Kelsey Mitchell added 26. Caitlin Clark was held to six points. Indiana squares its record at 7-7. The Fever returns home tomorrow night to face the Los Angeles Sparks.
