Franklin County rallied to down Batesville 45-36 in girls high school basketball heard last night on the Sports Voice. The Bulldogs led 22-19 at the half, but the Wildcats outscored Batesville 26-14 in the second half and get the win to square their record at 4-4. Batesville dips to 4-3. The Cats Ruby Singer tossed in a game-high 21 points. The Bulldogs were led by Maggie Jelinek’s 13 points and 10 from Nora Wiedeman.
Elsewhere around the area, Class 3A #7 Greensburg throttled cross county rival South Decatur 66-11; Oldenburg got past North Decatur 43-38; Milan rolled over Crothersville 62-24. and it was Edinburgh over Jac-Cen-Del 39-33.
Batesville Middle School boys basketball gained a split at Greendale. The 7th grade Bulldogs dropped a heartbreaker in the final seconds, falling to the Tigers 46-45. Miles Lawrence led BMS in scoring, totaling 14 of his 16 points in the second half. Teammate Isaiah Hernandez joined him in double figures with 13. Batesville 7th grade is now 9-4…The BMS 8th graders finished the night on a 22-4 run and took a 57-28 victory over Greendale. Logan Schneider led all scorers with 23 points. Bulldog teammate Clayton Kaiser chipped in 17. The Batesville 8th grade team goes to 12-0 on the year.
Coming up tonight in boys high school basketball, Batesville and Greensburg renew their longstanding rivalry in the Tree City. The Cincinnati Reds made it official and signed closer Emilio Pagan to a two-year, $20 million contract on Thursday after he passed his physical. The deal includes the ability for Pagan to opt out after the 2026 season. Pagan’s signing brings the Reds 40-man roster to 39.
Meanwhile, the team says the Reds Caravan will not take place this winter because of the return of Redsfest on January 16 and 17 at the Cincinnati Convention Center. Redsfest, which is usually held in December, has been off the schedule for two years because of the renovations at the convention center.
NFL teams have nominated players for the prestigious Walter Payton Man of the Year Award. The Cincinnati Bengals selected center Ted Karras, while the Indianapolis Colts named cornerback Kenny Moore II as the team’s nominee. This is Karras’ second nomination, and the third for Moore. The Walter Payton Man of the Year Award is considered the NFL’s most prestigious individual honor, and recognizes players who excel on the field and demonstrate a commitment to making a positive impact beyond the game. The 2025 recipient will be announced during NFL Honors, a prime time awards special airing Thursday, February 5.
