Milan varsity volleyball bested South Decatur in four sets. The Indians won the first set, 25-12, while the Cougars took the second, 25-23. Milan won third and fourth sets, 25-18, 25-21.
Batesville and South Ripley split in middle school volleyball. It was the Raiders taking the 7th grade match, 25-20, 25-15. The Bulldogs won the 8th grade contest in three sets. BMS came out on top in the first set, 25-18. South Ripley won the second, 25-16. And Batesville won the third set, 21-19.
Batesville girls soccer beat Connersville in varsity and JV action. It was the Bulldogs over the Spartans 6-1 in the varsity match. Maddie Prewitt scored two goals, while Ella Carpenter, Katie Lipps, Emma Miller and Hailee Weisenbach each kicked in one for Batesville. In the JV contest, it was Batesville over Connersville 5-nil. Avi Miller recorded a hat trick with three goals, while Olivia Wells and Aurora Mertz had a goal a piece.
The Los Angeles Dodgers doubled up the Reds 6-3 on the West Coast in a game heard late last night on WRBI. Nick Martinez gave up four earned runs and seven hits over 5 1/3 innings with two walks and three strikeouts, and was pinned with the loss. Future Hall of Famer Clayton Kershaw tossed five innings of two-hit baseball with one earned run and nine strikeouts to get the win. Cincinnati has dropped five of its last six games, and is now three-and-a-half games behind the Mets for the third and final National League Wild Card spot after New York won for the fourth time in its last five games. The Reds look to avoid being swept for the first time in 43 series tonight when lefthander Nick Lodolo returns from the injured list. The Dodgers counter with Shohei Ohtani. The Reds will open the 2026 season against another historic major league team. Cincinnati will host the Boston Red Sox for Opening Day in March 26.
Yesterday was the deadline for NFL teams to get down to the 53-man roster limit before the season opener. Among the Bengals cuts, former UC quarterback Desmond Ridder and long snapper Cal Adomitis. Guard Cordell Volson was cut due to injury. Undrafted long snapper William Wagner from Michigan made the team after winning the training camp battle with three-year incumbent Adomitis. Also making the team were undrafted defensive tackle Howard Cross III from Notre Dame, and safety PJ Jules. The Bengals visit the Cleveland Browns in the season opener on September 7.
Among those absent from the Indianapolis Colts roster following cut day were cornerback JuJu Brents and tight end Jelani Woods. Khalil Herbert and Jason Bean were also among those either waived or released. With the roster finalized, some players could be back once they clear the waiver wire. The Colts will face the Miami Dolphins at home Week 1.
The Indiana Fever calmed the Seattle Storm 95-75 in WNBA action last night in downtown Indianapolis. Aliyah Boston led the Fever with 27 points and nine rebounds. Odyssey Sims added 22 while Kelsey Mitchell scored 21 points. Indiana is now 20-and-18 on the season and holding on to a playoff spot. The Fever hopes to keep it that way when they head west to face the Los Angeles Sparks late Friday night.
Notre Dame head football coach Marcus Freeman says he is eager to get the season rolling. The Fighting Irish will head south to face Miami at Hard Rock Stadium in a rare Sunday game to open the college football season. CJ Carr is the starting quarterback for Notre Dame, but Freeman made it clear that both Carr and backup Kenny Minchey will be needed heavily this season. The Hurricanes now have former Georgia quarterback Carson Beck, whom the Irish faced in the College Football Playoff last season.
The Indiana Hoosiers will open the college football season at home against Old Dominion Saturday afternoon. Head coach Curt Cignetti has taken some criticism for scheduling ODU as the Hoosiers’ first game, but he told the press on Monday not to sleep on them. He says the Monarchs only lost by four to South Carolina last season in Week 1, and led for most of that contest.
The Purdue Boilermakers kick off the season against the Ball State Cardinals on Saturday at Ross-Ade Stadium. Head coach Barry Odom says it is not lost on him when it comes to the expectations of improving the program from a year ago. He says he feels the team is “close” to being game-ready. So far he is not releasing a depth chart of his squad. In response, Ball State head coach Mike Uremovich told the press this week that he’s not releasing one either.
