Decatur Central took home the boys championship trophy at Saturday’s second annual Raver Relays track and field meets. The Hawks scored 104 points; host Batesville was second at 92, followed by Franklin Central, Jennings County, Rushville, Milan and Tindley. Batesville won the girls meet with 98 points, followed by Jennings County, Franklin County, Decatur Central, Rushville and Milan.
South Ripley’s Cole Henry was named MVP of the Hoosier Basketball Coaches Association East-West boys All Star game yesterday at Columbus North. The West beat the East 125-111. Henry, playing on the East squad, tossed in a game high 29 points.

The Reds shut out the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-0 at Great American Ball Park in a game heard yesterday on WRBI. Cincinnati completes the three-game series sweep and evens its record at 8-8. Hunter Greene was spectacular again on the mound. He pitched seven scoreless innings, gave up two hits, struck out eight and walked one. He also retired the final 17 Pirate hitters he faced, and extended his scoreless innings streak to 18 2/3. The Reds have an off day before starting a three-game interleague series at home against the Seattle Mariners tomorrow night.
Reds Hall of Famer Tommy Helms passed away Sunday. A second baseman, Helms was the 1966 National League Rookie of the Year, and spent six seasons in a Reds uniform. He was part of one of the biggest trades in franchise history, when he was dealt with Lee May and Jim Stewart to the Houston Astros for Joe Morgan, Cesar Geronimo, Jack Billingham, Denis Menke and Ed Armbrister following the 1971 season, Helms was a two-time All Star and won two Gold Gloves during a 14-year Major League career. He also played for Pittsburgh and Boston. After his playing days ended, Helms was a Reds coach, served as interim manager in parts of the 1988 and ’89 seasons. He was inducted into the Reds Hall of Fame in 1979. Tommy Helms was 83.
The Pacers roared back from a 27-point deficit to outlast the host Cleveland Cavaliers 126-118 in double overtime in the regular season finale yesterday. Quenton Jackson led Indiana with 21 points. The Pacers head into the playoffs with a 50-32 record. Fourth seeded Indiana begins the postseason on Saturday against the 5th seeded Milwaukee Bucks.
Rory McIlroy outshot Justin Rose in a dramatic sudden death playoff to win the Masters at Augusta National on Sunday. McIlroy wins his first green jacket and, with his victory at Augusta, becomes just the sixth golfer to become a PGA grand slam champion, joining the likes of Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.
