Aurora, In. — As students are returning from the Indiana FCCLA State Leadership Conference March 7-9, 2019 in Muncie, Indiana, one student is coming back to Southeastern Indiana with a new role to fill for the next year.

Torrey Hibbard, daughter of Anthony Hibbard and Aimy Hensley, a sophomore at South Dearborn High School was elected to serve as Indiana FCCLA 2019-2020 State Vice President of STAR Events.

“I wanted to reach a bigger audience of students so I can encourage them to be a leader like FCCLA can make them”, says Hibbard. “I have grown a lot as a student since joining FCCLA, and I am excited to work with the other state officers to continue the legacy of FCCLA here in Indiana”.

To become a state officer, Hibbard had to go through an extensive process that included a test over FCCLA, multiple interviews in Indianapolis and the State Leadership Conference, giving a speech in front of the entire delegation in attendance at the State Leadership Conference, and being interviewed by the voting delegates from each chapter in Indiana FCCLA.

“The last time South Dearborn has had an Indiana FCCLA State Officer was 2003. I am glad that I could help bring this tradition of leadership back to South Dearborn”, says Bryan Schuerman, M.Ed, South Dearborn FCCLA Chapter Adviser. “I was an Indiana FCCLA State Officer in high school myself. To see one of my students want to take that call of leadership in my first year as South Dearborn’s FCCLA adviser is very humbling, and very exciting. I look forward to the leadership that Torrey will bring not only to our FCCLA Chapter at South Dearborn, but throughout the State of Indiana.”

Dr. Jeff Bond, Principal at South Dearborn High School says “I am very excited to see the legacy of a state officer return to South Dearborn. I’ve talked with Torrey on many occasions, and we are proud to support her in her new position as an Indiana FCCLA State Officer”.

During the next year, Hibbard will plan and execute the Indiana FCCLA State Events including a summer leadership academy, fall leadership academy and the 2020 Indiana FCCLA State Leadership Family, Career and Community Leaders of America Conference. In addition, Hibbard will travel across the State of Indiana and meet with other FCCLA Chapters and help promote FCCLA, Family and Consumer Sciences Education and Career and Technical Education across the state. Hibbard will also attend the 2019 FCCLA National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, California in her new role as a Indiana FCCLA State Officer.
