Greensburg, IN — Greensburg city leaders and Decatur County officials unveiled and dedicated a Safe Haven Baby Box at the Greensburg Fire Department (GFD) yesterday. The Baby Box, located toward the back of the firehouse, is now operational and ready to use. It’s the 61st Baby Box in Indiana and the 70th in the country.
Safe Haven Baby Boxes allow a mother to surrender her newborn with 100 percent anonymity and without legal repercussions. The box has many features, including heating and cooling components, an alarm system to alert firefighters to the presence of a baby and a soft light. Babies surrendered in Indiana under the Safe Haven Law are taken into custody by the Department of Child Services and often placed with their adoptive family within 30 days.
Speakers at Sunday’s event included Mayor Joshua Marsh, Washington Township Trustee Christian Rust, Greensburg Fire Chief Nathan Stoermer, and Safe Haven Founder Monica Kelsey, among others. The Safe Haven Baby Box at GFD was dedicated to the memory of Decatur County Right To Life founder and community leader Bob Rust, who passed away last March.
