Richard (Dick) Rogers Meyer, age 92 of Batesville, died Tuesday, April 4, 2023 at his home. Born January 9, 1931 in Batesville, he is the son of Ruth (Rogers) and Chester Meyer. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. Dick attended Batesville Elementary School and Batesville High School, graduating in 1949. He played four years on the Bulldog golf and basketball teams and worked at Ulrig’s Bakery and the A&P store, while attending high school. He worked in Mt Carmel, Illinois for a year before enlisting in the Marine Corp serving during the Korean War. He was stationed at Paris Island and Camp Pendleton as well as spending 13 months in Korea. He married Marian Hahn on August 22, 1953 and this year would have marked 70 years together. Dick began his work career in June of 1954 for Hillenbrand Industries in the office of the Batesville Casket Company and transitioned over to the Forethought Company where he stayed until retirement. While working full time, Dick attended University of Cincinnati night school two to three nights a week for nine years earning a degree in commerce in 1965.
Dick took an active part in anything he belonged to. A life member of both the Ripley County V.F.W. Post #3183 and the Prell-Bland American Legion Post #271, he served as Legion Commander from 1973-1974, Adjutant from 1970-1971 and 1975-1977 in addition to Finance Officer from 1961-70. For the VFW he served as Quartermaster.
A longtime member of Hillcrest Country Club, he served as recording secretary from 1976-1999 and on the board of directors until 2002. A Club Champion seven times, the Meyer-Walsman Cup tournament was named for Dick and Bob Walsman. He made numerous trips to the World Amateur tourneys and many other golf outings. He later worked at Cricket Ridge Golf Course.
Many happy times with his family were spent on vacations on school breaks to Kentucky parks. So many wonderful memories.
Dick is survived by his wife, Marian, daughters Rebecca Sanders and Barbara (James) Morand, sons Thomas (Pauletta) Meyer and Theodore (Judy) Meyer, 11 grandchildren Joshua, Philip, Jason and Kevin Meyer, Andrew, Matthew and Rachel Morand, Nicole Rodman, Michaela Kruse, and Heather Schlipp. He was preceded in death by his first grandchild Nathaniel Meyer. 13 great grandchildren-Ryan, Graham and Owen Rodman, Gloria and Calvin Kruse, Claire Meyer, Tilly, Duke, Maren, and Gwen Meyer, Aiden, Shelby, and Brooklyn Schlipp.
Visitation is Monday, April 10th, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. with his grandson Rev. Mr. Andrew Morand officiating. Burial will be in St. Louis Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Ripley County V.F.W. Post #3183 and the Prell-Bland American Legion Post #271. The family requests memorials to the Ripley County V.F.W. or Margaret Mary Health Foundation Hospice.
