(Decatur County, IN) – Red crown rot in soybeans has been detected in our area.

Decatur County is one of eight across Indiana in which red crown rot has come up.

It’s been far more common in southern states, but its appearance in the Midwest is a relatively recent development, having been detected in Indiana for the first time in 2022.

Purdue Field Crop Pathologist Darcy Telenko told our newsgathering partners at Hoosier Ag Today that red crown rot is difficult to diagnose because the symptoms are nearly identical to other diseases such as sudden death syndrome and brown stem rot.

Telenko says there’s nothing that can be done now to mitigate red crown rot this season, but you need to know if it’s there.

The disease has also been detected in Rush, Bartholomew, Allen, Adams, DeKalb, Knox and Spencer counties.
