Pope names Thompson Archbishop of Indianapolis

Indianapolis, Ind. — Pope Francis has named Bishop Charles C. Thompson as the seventh archbishop of Indianapolis. Thompson takes over for Cardinal Joseph Tobin who recently relocated to New Jersey.

The 56-year-old Thompson is a Louisville native and the oldest of three children. He is a graduate of Moore High School and Bellmarine College in 1979 with an accounting degree. He earned a master of divinity from the St. Meinrad School of Theology. In 1992 he earned a Master in Canon Law degree from St. Paul University in Ottawa, Canada.

He began service as a priest in the Louisville Archdiocese in 1987. He has also held various positions in the greater Louisville area.

An installation mass will be held on Friday, July 28.
