The Greensburg Pirates played host to Oldenburg Academy on Saturday and fell 14-3.
The Pirates were without starting defender and senior leader, Trevin White which caused several Pirates to play out of position to start the match. This led to several early Oldenburg goals and they never looked back. Once Greensburg got settled in, the defensive communication picked up and freshman defender Dylan Hogg came in to his own at stopper for the Pirates, stepping to ball quickly and forcing Oldenburg to take a few extra touches before trying to get shots off. Dylan did a good job of communicating with sophomore Trevor Lee who started at sweeper for the first time for the Pirates and filled in nicely for the absent Trevin White.
Another bright spot for the Pirates was Joseph Pacilio who scored all 3 goals for Greensburg and recorded the team’s first hat trick since the Regional Champion Greensburg Pirates of 2012. 2 of Joseph’s 3 goals came within the final minutes of each half, showing the Pirates continued to fight, despite the score.
The Greensburg Lady Pirates hosted class 1A #15 ranked Oldenburg Academy Saturday afternoon and fell 8-0 to the Lady Twisters.
#2 ranked OA traveled to Greensburg on Saturday for a contest.
‘We came out strong from the start. We had 9 different players that netted goals on the day. We also had 5 different players getting assists. Offensively we had a good day we got to see a lot of different combinations. As we were able to move some boys around. Some teams rely on 1 or 2 boys to score we are lucky in that regards as can spread the scoring around. We did give up 3 goals on the day. The first goal was a penalty in the box that gave Greensburg a PK kick that they converted. We also gave up a late goal in the first half and 1 late in the game.’ Twisters Coach Stan Getz.
All 28 players that dressed saw playing time. With a 8-2 lead at half time we were able to rest the starters for most of the second half. With games on Monday and Tuesday this was nice.
The Lady Pirates did a better job today by piecing together longer stretches of not allowing a goal. The back door runs by OA and their relentless attack wore the home squad down. The defensive line of Emma Porter, Takisha Lee, Sarah Schneider, Alaina Nobbe and Elizabeth Hyatt forced 6 offside traps for game.
Emily Lowe made 20 saves in goal for the game while Emily Rosales recorded the only shot on goal for the Lady Pirates. Seven injured players made for a thin bench Saturday, but the squad rallied together and played one of their best matches of the season.
The loss drops the team to 0-6 and they will host South Ripley on Tuesday, August 29 with a 5 PM kickoff.
