OPINION: World Adoption Day, this Sunday!

Every year on November 9, families around the world celebrate World Adoption Day—a day to honor the beauty of family, share adoption stories, and shine a light on the millions of children who deserve a safe, loving home.

If you consider yourself pro-life, this day carries a special meaning. Being “for life” is about more than a political stance or a bumper sticker. It’s about valuing every single person—every child—simply because they exist. And there may be no more powerful way to demonstrate that belief than by celebrating adoption: welcoming a child into your life, not because they share your DNA, but because they deserve your love.

A Celebration That’s Also a Challenge

World Adoption Day began in 2014 as a global movement symbolized by the smiley-face-on-the-palm photo shared around the world. But behind that joyful symbol lies real-life grit. Adoption isn’t easy. It asks a lot of parents—emotionally, financially, and spiritually.

And let’s be honest: it also takes courage.
Courage to love a child who may come with a difficult past.
Courage to step into situations that aren’t neat and tidy.
Courage to say “yes” even when you know it will be hard.

That’s why today deserves not only celebration but deep respect—especially for those families who adopt children with physical, developmental, or emotional challenges. These parents show us what love looks like when it rolls up its sleeves.

Love Beyond the Familiar

Here in the lily-white corners of Southeastern Indiana (and plenty of other small towns like it), it’s impossible not to notice when a family looks “different.” And yet, that difference is often where the most beautiful stories begin.

Families who adopt across racial or ethnic lines model something powerful: that love is not limited by color, culture, or origin. Their homes become small pictures of the larger truth that every human being carries equal worth and dignity.

If that makes some people a little uncomfortable—good. Growth often does. These families remind us what it really means to see the person before the label.

How You Can Honor the Day

  • Draw a smiley face on your palm and post it with #WorldAdoptionDay.

  • Listen to the stories of adoptees and adoptive families in your community.

  • Support foster-care and adoption agencies through giving or volunteering.

  • Pray for or encourage those in the adoption journey.

  • Simply celebrate the truth that every child’s life matters.

The Real Heart of It

At the end of the day, World Adoption Day isn’t about hashtags or heart-warming commercials. It’s about the daily, quiet heroism of families who choose to love—fully, fiercely, and sometimes at great personal cost.

It’s about reminding ourselves that every life—no matter how complicated or unexpected—has value.

And that’s something worth celebrating this Sunday, and every single day.
