Versailles woman killed in Ripley County crash

RIPLEY COUNTY, IN — A woman from Versailles was killed in a two-vehicle crash on US 421 near Rexville Tuesday afternoon.

Indiana State Police say a car driven by 80-year-old Mary Hunt was southbound on 421 near County Road 925 South around 1:30 pm when her car crossed the centerline and into the path of a northbound box truck driven by 34-year-old Ronald Chigumira of Avon. The vehicles collided head-on.

Hunt was pronounced dead at the scene by the Ripley County Coroner, while Chigumira was treated at the scene for minor injuries and released.

Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors in the head-on crash, although toxicology results are pending. The investigation is still going on.

Indiana State Police Master Trooper Ben Bastin is the lead investigator. He was assisted at the scene by Senior Trooper Kyle Black, Senior Trooper Matthew Holley, and Trooper Andrew Garrett from the ISP-Versailles Post; the Ripley County Sheriff’s Office; Ripley County EMS; the New Marion Fire Department; the Versailles Fire Department; and the Ripley County Coroner’s Office.
