(Batesville, IN) – Southeastern Indiana could see a brief period of light snow as residents head into New Year’s Eve, though forecasters say significant travel impacts are unlikely.
The National Weather Service says a weak system passing just north of the region may bring scattered snowflakes late Wednesday, primarily during the evening hours. Any accumulation from this first round is expected to be minimal or nonexistent.
A second, slightly stronger system is forecast to arrive later Thursday, with a cold front pushing southeast across Indiana during the late afternoon and evening. That timing coincides with increased travel as people head out for New Year’s Eve celebrations.
Forecasters say light snow could develop as the front moves through southeastern Indiana, continuing into the evening before tapering off overnight. Snow is expected to end from west to east, with most of the region seeing precipitation diminish around or shortly after midnight.
Snowfall totals across southeastern Indiana are expected to remain modest. Current projections call for a dusting to around one-half inch in most areas, with slightly higher amounts possible north of Interstate 74. While totals are light, brief slick spots could develop, particularly on bridges and untreated roads.
Colder air will follow the system into New Year’s Day. High temperatures Thursday are expected to remain in the 20s before a gradual warmup later in the weekend.
Forecasts show temperatures climbing back into the 30s by Saturday, with some areas reaching the lower 40s by Sunday or Monday. The National Weather Service says the overall weather pattern should remain relatively quiet into early next week, with little chance of additional precipitation.
Looking ahead, forecasters note early signals of a return to colder and more unsettled winter weather later in January, though no significant storms are currently forecast during the first week of the new year.
Residents planning to travel New Year’s Eve are encouraged to allow extra time and stay aware of changing road conditions during the evening hours.
