New graduation requirements for Hoosier students approved

Indianapolis, In. — The Indiana State Board of Education approved new graduation requirements by a 7-2 vote yesterday.

In addition to meeting current standards, members of the class of 2023 will have to demonstrate employability by getting an after school job or volunteer experience. Students will have to show post-secondary readiness by earning an honors diploma, an industry certificate, apprenticeship or complete a test like the SAT, ACT or ASVAB.

The new requirements were developed by the 14-member Indiana Graduation Pathways panel over the summer. Some have expressed concern that special needs and students that use English as a second language could be harmed by the new requirements.
