Nelson Merle Haessig, Sr.

Nelson Merle Haessig, Sr., of Milan, was born on January 16, 1945 in Milan, the son of Loren H. and Alma Roberts Haessig.  He married Patricia Youngman at St. Maurice Catholic Church in Napoleon on May 21, 1966 and she survives.  Nelson served his country during the Korean War in the United States Army.  He grew up in the family grocery business –Haessig’s Market at Negangard’s Corner, and later co-owned it with his brother, Robert.  Nelson could always be found at the store, and upon his retirement Haessig’s Market had served the community for almost 80 years.  He also enjoyed helping family and friends, spending time with his family and grilling out.  On Thursday, March 16, 2017 at the age of 72, Nelson passed away at his residence.   

 

Those surviving who will honor Nelson’s memory include his loving wife of over 50 years, Patricia Haessig; children, Nelson (Clara) Haessig, Jr., of Milan, Robert (Rebecca) Haessig of Sunman, Tonya (John) Alford of Milan, and Douglas (Megan) Haessig of Avon, OH; 11 grandchildren, and one brother, Donald Haessig of Milan.  Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Joseph John Haessig, and brothers, Robert L. Haessig and Roger Haessig. 

 

Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. with Rosary at 3:15 at Cook Rosenberger Funeral Home, 107 Vine Street, Sunman.  A Mass of Christian burial, officiated by Father Shaun Whittington will be Wednesday, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Nicholas Catholic Church.  Burial with military honors provided by the Kenneth Driver Post #337 Sunman American Legion will follow in St. Paul Cemetery, Sunman.
