Mildred “Milly” Gross of Greensburg passed away on Monday July 24, 2023, with her son and daughter by her side. She was born December 11, 1930, in Greensburg. She was the daughter of John and Bessie (Bogard) Hess. Milly was united in marriage to Louis Gross on December 27, 1957, at the First Baptist Church. They were married nearly forty years until his passing in 1996.
Milly was a lifelong resident of Greensburg residing for sixty years at her home on Second Street. Milly’s job was being a great homemaker and mother. She spent many years caring for neighborhood children. She loved that all the neighborhood kids would be playing every night in her front yard. Later in life she cared for her mother who died at her home and cared for her husband for many years after he became ill. She was a natural caregiver with a loving, kind soul. She was most excited when her grandchildren would come to visit and then her great granddaughter became the light of her life.
Milly enjoyed reading all kinds of material and educated herself on many topics. She enjoyed watching the birds with her husband and had many bird feeders in her yard.
Whether it was Milly, Mrs. Gross, Mom, Grandma Milly, or Grammy Milly, she rocked all those roles and she will be missed by everyone who knew her.
Milly was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and three half siblings: John Hess Jr, Louis Hess, and Amy Ritchey.
Milly is survived by her son, Bob (Sheryl) Gross of Greensburg; and her daughter, Kim (Scott) Schaffer of Mesquite, Texas. Milly is survived by five grandchildren: Samantha (Adrian) Richards and Sarah Schaffer living in Texas, Tyler Gross and John Redelman of Greensburg, and Sara (Logan) Scott of New Point. She is survived by her great-granddaughter, Alyvia Smith.
Milly is also survived by her long-time neighbor and friend, Sally Duncan. She wanted to thank Sally for all her love and support over the years. Milly would also like to thank her long-time hairdresser, Sue Brewsaugh.
Visitation will be on Thursday, July 27, 2023, from 10:00AM-12:00PM at Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home in Greensburg with a graveside service following at Rossburg Cemetery in New Point. Donations may be made in her honor to St Jude Hospital for Children. Online condolences can be made at www.popfuneralhome.com.
