Men’s NCAA tourney: IU, Wright State, ND all win First Four games

All three regional men’s basketball teams playing in an NCAA First Four tournament game in Dayton won.

On Tuesday, Indiana roped the Cowboys of Wyoming 66-58.

The Hoosiers Trace Jackson-Davis scored 29 points and pulled down nine rebounds.  Jordan Geronimo had 15 points and seven rebounds while Xavier Johnson posted 10 points, seven assists and four boards.

The 12th seeded Hoosiers will face the fifth seeded Gaels of St. Mary’s in Portland at 7:20 pm Thursday.

On Wedensday, Wright State outgunned the Bulldogs of Bryant 93-82 for the program’s first-ever NCAA tournament win.

Former Greensburg Pirate Andrew Welage saw 15 minutes of time for the victorious Raiders and contributed six points, three rebounds and three assists.  Teammate Tanner Holden poured in 37 points to go along with 11 rebounds.  Trey Calvin folowed with 21 points, five caroms and four assists and Grant Basile turned in 14 points and eight rebounds.

Sixteenth seeded Wright State next has the top seeded Wildcats of Arizona on Friday at 7:30 pm in San Diego.

And Notre Dame trailed for most of the night against Rutgers but beat the Scarlet Knights, 89-87, in a double overtime thriller.  It was appropriate the game finished just after midnight, giving the Irish the win on St. Patrick’s Day.

ND’s Paul Atkinson scored 26 with six rebounds.  He hit the game winning two on an offensive putback with 1.7 seconds left in the second extra session.

Also for the South Bend boys, Nate Laszewski had 18 points and six rebounds, Cormac Ryan scored 16 while Dane Goodwin booked a dozen points and four boards.

The 11th seeded Irish now get to play the sixth seeded Crimson Tide of Alabama on Friday at 4:25 pm in San Diego.
