Melvin Dunbar, age 79 of Sunman

Melvin Dunbar, of Sunman, was born on May 15, 1945, in Batesville, Indiana, a son to Floyd and Caroline Rahe Dunbar. He married Elizabeth “Betty” Knecht on May 11, 1968, in St. Peters, Indiana and together they raised 4 children. Melvin served his country in the U.S. Army.  Melvin worked for Hillenbrand as a truck driver for over 20 years and was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church and the Tri-County Coon Hunter’s Association.  He enjoyed trap shooting, watching westerns and M.A.S.H., reloading ammo, and mowing the yard.  On Tuesday March 18, 2025, at the age of 79, Melvin passed away peacefully at his residence.

Those surviving who will cherish Melvin’s memory include his children, Michael (Jenn) Dunbar of Sunman, Melanie (Richard) Lindsey of Morres Hill, Bethany (Bryon) Hartman of Milan, and Nicholas Dunbar of Lawrenceburg; 8 grandchildren, 12 grandchildren, and two siblings, Wayne (LaJo) Dunbar and Judy (Jeff) Ellis. In addition to his parents, Melvin was preceded in death by his wife of over 55 years, Betty Dunbar, and one brother, Jerry Dunbar.

Friends may gather and remember Melvin on Saturday, March 22, 2025, from 9 a.m. until Mass time at 11 a.m. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 1207 East Rd, Brookville, Indiana. Burial will follow immediately after in St. Peters Catholic Cemetery.
