March is ‘Problem Gambling Awareness Month’

Batesville, In. — March 19th is the day when sport lovers get their pencils out, print off their brackets and brainstorm for the NCAA March Madness tournaments. According to ESPN, during 2017 March Madness, 70 million brackets were filled out adding up to over $10.4 billion dollars spent.

March Madness is a big attraction to people, but many do not realize how gambling can become a bigger problem. According to the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG), “Chemicals in the brain are activated during gambling much like when individuals drink alcohol. Just like having a drink can develop into alcoholism, gambling activity can become an addiction, affecting more than 5 million Americans.”

March is problem gambling awareness month. This year’s theme is Awareness+Action. The goal is to increase public awareness of gambling addiction, treatment and other services. Additionally, the campaign is calling healthcare providers to action by encouraging them to screen clients for possible gambling problems. It is better to know the risk and play it safe.

Warning Signs of Problem Gambling Include:

  • Constantly borrowing money to keep betting
  • Preoccupation with betting
  • Lying about amounts of money spent on gambling
  • Anxiety and sleeplessness due to gambling activity
