(Lawrenceburg, IN) – A man has been arrested after he allegedly stole a car from a Greendale dealership and led police on a high-speed chase last week.

Dearborn County Prosecutor Lynn Deddens says a Lawrenceburg police officer spotted a blue Dodge Charger with a Kelsey Chevrolet tag but no license plate run a red light around 2 a.m. last Tuesday, January 21 on U.S. 50 near Hollywood Boulevard.

The driver, Idris Muktar, allegedly refused to stop and sped up to avoid police. A pursuit began and went onto State Road 48 and back to 50.

The pursuit reached speeds up to 120 mph and was called off near U.S. 50 and Dutch Hollow Road in Aurora. The car was later found abandoned on 50 with a broken rear passenger window, a Kelsey Chevrolet tag, a backpack inside, and shoe prints in the snow leading into nearby woods.

A police K9 was deployed to track the suspect. A nearby homeowner told police that a black male in a blue jacket knocked on their door, claiming his car had broken down with mother inside before running west on U.S. 50

Two hours after the high-speed chase started, police tracked down Muktar walking on U.S 50 in Aurora. He was arrested and, during a search, investigators found a lanyard around his neck with a Dodge key fob and two other broken fob pieces.

The car dealership confirmed that a blue Dodge Charger was missing from the lot.

The vehicle’s VIN matched the Charger found abandoned on U.S. 50.

Security footage from the dealership showed a man breaking the Charger’s window, entering the vehicle, and driving it off the lot.

Additional footage from a nearby fast food restaurant revealed an orange Dodge Charger in the drive-thru, dropping off a man matching the suspect’s description.

Muktar is charged with Resisting Law Enforcement, Reckless Driving, Resisting Law Enforcement, Theft, Unlawful Entry into Motor Vehicle, Operating a Motor Vehicle Without Ever Receiving a License, and Refusal to ldentify Self.

Muktar, who is from Kentucky, is being held in the Dearborn County Law Enforcement Center on a $200,000 surety and $7,500 cash bond by order of Dearborn Superior Court Judge Sally McLaughlin.
