Lowell Edward Walterman, 91, of Greensburg, passed away at 9:40 a.m. on Wednesday, May 4, 2022 at the Decatur County Memorial Hospital. He was born May 23, 1930 in Greensburg, Indiana the son of Edward and Edna (Phillips) Walterman, both deceased. He married Betty Lou Vanderbur on February 21, 1947 and she preceded him in death on March 2, 2001.
Lowell retired from Allison’s (GM) Indianapolis after 35 years of service. While he worked there, along with Betty, they owned and operated Pasquale’s Pizza located on N. Lincoln St. in Greensburg in the early 1960’s. He was an active member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Eagles Lodge, where many of his friends would call him “Red” or “Bud” but most often “Watermelon”
After his wife of 54 years passed, he lived alone until his passing, doing almost everything for himself. He especially loved growing his famous tomatoes every year, which he says were the best in the country. While he was still able, he loved to play golf and Bing with his daughter, Kathy.
He is survived by one daughter, Rolanna Kathleen “Kathy” (Walterman) Melcher, 9 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, 8 great great grandchildren, plus several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by 1 grandchild, Pamela Faye Walterman, twin sons, Max and Clarence Walterman, 4 sisters, Mary, Mabel, Muriel, and Opal, 2 brothers, Howard and Russell, and several nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will gather at 8:45 a.m. on Saturday, May 7, 2022 at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greensburg to pray the rosary. Visitation will follow until the time of the funeral mass to be held at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. John Meyer officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Greensburg.
