Leising’s Vet Bill Moves to Governor

State Senator Jean Leising. (R-Oldenburg)

(Statehouse) – A bill authored by State Sen. Jean Leising (R-Oldenburg) to expand the pool of veterinarians and veterinary technicians in Indiana passed out of the House of Representatives on Tuesday with bipartisan support.

Leising says Senate Enrolled Act 56 would help address the veterinary shortage in Indiana by giving out-of-state veterinarians and veterinary technicians the opportunity to care for animals in the Hoosier State.

SEA 56 calls for allowing the Board of Veterinary Medicine to issue licenses without requiring an examination for applicants who have out-of-state licenses.

This legislation would bring veterinarians and veterinary technicians under the same rules that apply for other types of health care professionals.

“This legislation would help expand the pool of large animal veterinarians in our state and give our farmers more options when their animals are in need of care,” Leising said. “SEA 56 is among the first of the 2026 session to move to Gov. Braun for his consideration. I am pleased to see this bill pass both chambers, and I thank everyone who collaborated with me.”

SEA 56 now moves to the governor’s desk for further consideration.
