Leising: Bill to update Indiana State Fair Commission passes House committee

Indianapolis, In. — A bill sponsored by Republican state senator from Oldenburg Jean Leising  that would update the Indiana State Fair Commission recently passed the Senate Committee on Agriculture unanimously.

House Bill 1638 would add the director of the Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service and an appointed member of the State Fair Board as voting members of the State Fair Commission. It would also add the chairperson and vice chairperson of the State Fair Advisory Committee and a community representative as nonvoting members.

“The Indiana State Fair attracts people from across our state and country each year, supporting local businesses and our economy as a whole,” Leising said. “Members of the State Fair Commission and the State Fair Board are among the many people who ensure our fair runs smoothly each year. This bill would provide the commission with the additional members it needs to operate effectively and cooperatively with the State Fair Board.”

The bill would also require the commission and board to ensure the State Fair is held annually.

HB 1638 will now move to the full Senate for consideration.
