Joseph M. Van Winkle Sr.


Joseph Miller Van Winkle, 82, of Aurora, Indiana, passed away Tuesday, July 12, 2022, in Edgewood, Kentucky.

He was born August 31, 1939, in Hamilton, OH, son of the late Ellis Van Winkle and Dixie (Mosley) Van Winkle.

Joseph worked as a Union Millwright. He enjoyed big game hunting in Golden, CO. Joseph liked to tinker on mowers, work in the garden, fishing and traveling the country. At 18 Joseph walked and hitch hiked 470 miles. He also rode from Oklahoma City to East St. Louis from the stock yards. Joseph once met Jackie Gleason. But most importantly he was a great family man, an excellent grandfather, and he will be greatly missed.

Joseph is survived by his sons, Anthony W. (Carol) Van Winkle of Moores Hill, IN, Joseph M. (Jennifer) Van Winkle of Dillsboro, IN; brothers, Earl (Jerilyn) Van Winkle of Madison, IN and Ernie (Stella) Van Winkle of Bristol, IN; grandchildren, Madison Van Winkle, Tony Van Winkle, Jr., Brittany Van Winkle, Joseph Van Winkle, Landen Van Winkle, Kalei Van Winkle, Dawson Van Winkle, Kolby Van Winkle and Dakota Perdue; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ellis and Dixie; six siblings, Carolyn Smith, Ralph Van Winkle, Walter “Pud” Van Winkle, Gerald Van Winkle, Ellis “Rip” Van Winkle, Jr., and Virginia “Jenny” Van Winkle.

Friends will be received Tuesday, July 19, 2022, 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm at the Rullman Hunger Funeral Home, 219 Mechanic Street, Aurora, IN.

Services will be held at the funeral home at 2:00 pm.

Interment will follow in the Mt. Sinai Cemetery, Aurora, Indiana.
