John Wayne Coombs, 83, of Westport, passed away at 10:40 a.m. on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at his residence. He was born on October 6, 1940, in Trimble County, Kentucky, the son of John H. and Ina (Banks) Coombs. He graduated from Sandcreek High School in 1958. John was a lifelong farmer. He drove a school bus for Decatur County Community Schools for 42 years. He also worked for Bill Gatewood as a carpenter, for Briggs Equipment in Greensburg, for Lyman Ponsler as a livestock truck driver and for Floyd Gatewood at the lumber yard. He was a member of the Westport United Methodist Church and was a founding member of the Decatur County Tractor Pullers Association. John married Faith Noreen Gardner on June 6, 1960, at the Westport United Methodist Church and she survives. Other survivors include his children, Jeffrey Wayne (Rhonda) Coombs of West Terre Haute, Jerry Dale (Kim) Coombs of Shelbyville, Jaylin Ann Coombs of Westport, and Jody Lee (Dianna) Coombs of Palmetto, Florida, his brother, Mitchell Coombs of Cumming, Georgia and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Martha Cooper, Marguerite Caldwell and Bernice Rice and his brother, Gayle Coombs. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday January 27, 2024, at Bass & Gasper Funeral Home in Westport with Dan Cooper officiating. Burial will follow at Westport Cemetery. A time of visitation will be on Friday, January 26, 2024, from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
