The Reds had a tough weekend at home.  After sweeping the Yankees in New York, Detroit did the same to them in Cincy, Sunday’s final score 5-1.

Detroit’s Tarik Skubal retired the first 6 Reds he faced, before Cincy’s Austin Wynns hit a double to lead off the 3rd inning.

After that, Skubal set down the next 9 Reds batters, while Detroit’s Zach McKinstry singled in the game’s first run in the top of the 4th.  Noelvi Marte finally got the Reds on the board in the bottom of the 7th, batting in Jeimer Candelario.  But in the top of the 8th, McKinstrey belted his 3rd homer of the season, a 2-run shot to right field, making it 4-1 Tigers.  Detroit tallied one more score, for that winning final, 5-1.

Tonight, the Reds welcome the Colorado Rockies to Cincy for 4 games.  The broadcast arrives on your radio at 6:40, on the Sports Voice, 103.9 WRBI.

Congrats to Reds’ shortstop Elly De La Cruz.  The 22-year-old’s been named an All-Star for the first time.  Elly’s the only Red to have played in every one of the team’s 90 games so far this season.  He leads Cincy with 15 home runs, and all of baseball with 43 stolen bases, more than the total for 5 whole teams.  De La Cruz is also only the 3rd Major League player with 15 homers and 40 steals, through his team’s first 85 games this season.  He’ll be the only Red on the National League roster for next week’s All-Star Game.

Before tonight’s Reds action, join Terrance Arney and Leon Smith for “Overtime,” just after our 6:00 news block.  Tonight the guys will have another fascinating conversation, this with University of Michigan and Olympic wrestler Mason Parris of Lawrenceburg.  Overtime, following the 6:00 news block this evening, again on 103.9, WRBI.

The weekend’s major league games also saw Batesville native Bryan Hoeing start for the Miami Marlins against the White Sox Friday.  He went 3 solid innings, after being mostly a reliever for quite a while.  Hoeing allowed 5 hits but only 1 run, and he struck out 4 batters, on the way to taking a 3-2 loss.  He hadn’t played at the big-league level for 2 months, and said after the game it felt great to be back there.

Racing this weekend featured the Honda Indy 200 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course Sunday.  Fans got a thriller there, as Alex Palou and Pato O’Ward battled each other down to the final few laps, O’Ward managing to hold Palou off for the win, taking the checkered flag by just under half a second, the closest IndyCar finish of the season.
