Men’s holiday college basketball this afternoon saw the Michigan Wolverines defeat the Ohio State Buckeyes in Big 10 play, 73 to 65. Men’s games over the weekend saw UC’s Bearcats dropping a close one to Baylor, 62 to 59. Purdue put it to Penn State Saturday, 95 to 78, and after beating Minnesota 74 to 62 Saturday, the Hoosiers host the Boilers tomorrow. Also, Xavier beat down Providence 85 to 65, Toledo topped Ball State 77 to 72, and Indiana State crushed Belmont 94 to 64.
As many anticipated after the Purdue Boilermakers’ loss last week to Nebraska, the Boilers are now out of the nation’s number 1 spot in the AP Top 25 poll, but they didn’t fall too far. The nation’s new top team is the UConn Huskies, with an identical 15 & 2 record. But the defending national champion Huskies beat Georgetown by 4 at the right time this weekend, because not only Purdue, but the rest of the former top 3, Houston and Kansas, also lost games last week. The rest of the top 5 now includes the Boilers dropping to 2nd, followed by the Jayhawks, North Carolina’s Tar Heels, and those Houston Cougars.
At the Ohio River Valley Conference swim meet over the weekend, the Milan Indians swept both genders’ championships, taking the girls’ meet with 89 points to second-place Southwestern’s 72, and capturing the boys’ side in dominating fashion with 115 points for the Indians, South Ripley coming a more distant second at 57. Milan event winners were led by Dylan Thomas for the boys, taking both the 100 freestyle and backstroke, and anchoring the boys’ 200 medley relay. Milan next hosts a triangular Thursday, against Southwestern-Hanover and Batesville.
Also making recent waves, the Oldenburg Academy boys’ 200 medley relay team and the 400 Freestyle relay. Both set new school records in their respective events this month, in meets on the 6th for the 200, and this past Saturday for the 400. Coaches say OA is quickly becoming one of the most competitive swim programs in this part of the state.
As spring training gets closer, the big baseball deal that had been talked about for days finally got done Saturday, as Cincy native relief pitcher Brent Suter passed his physical after agreeing Thursday to a 1-year, 3-million-dollar contract with the Reds, with an option for 2025. Over his 7-year major-league career, Suter’s 40 & 22 with a 3.49 ERA in 253 games, and despite throwing in the thin air of Coors Field for 27 games last season, he allowed no home runs in Denver, and only 3 all season.
You’ll hear how he does back home this season, here on your Reds station, WRBI.
