Jim’s Journal, February 7th, 2024

Tonight’s one of those rare evenings where we won’t have any games on WRBI, but we do want to remind you there’ll be plenty of basketball action again starting tomorrow, when the Rushville boys visit Batesville.  Then Friday, South Dearborn goes to South Ripley.  Those broadcasts will begin at 7:15 each evening, with tipoffs both set for 7:30.

And don’t miss our big hoops triple-header Saturday.  It starts with those Batesville Bulldog boys hosting the East Central Trojans, the afternoon broadcast starting at 1:15, for a 1:30 tip.  A couple hours after that one ends, the 2024 girls’ basketball tournament’s back on the air, with a pair of local squads in regional games.  First, it’ll be North Decatur taking its 20-win record to Campbellsburg to face Linton-Stockton.  Tipoff is set for 4:00 there, so we’ll take the air at 3:45.  Saturday evening, Jac-Cen-Del’s Eagles will be in Shelby County trying to get a grip on the Eels of Eminence, on the air at 6:45, tipping at 7:00.  Don’t miss a moment–  we’ll have it all for you  here at WRBIRadio.com, on the radio at 103.9 FM, and on the new WRBI app.  And we’ll also keep you updated with the scores of the Greensburg-Scottsburg regional.

Last night’s exciting game we covered on WRBI featured a much tighter boys’ contest than anyone, including the North Decatur Chargers, probably expected.  They fell way behind the Milan Indians early, then came roaring back, and the second half swung either direction, many times.  Finally, North Decatur prevailed, 57-51, and Kaden Muckerheide, who hit 8 free throws in the 4th quarter, topped all scorers with 22 points.

Of course the fact we had that Milan game reminds us of the huge historic event being celebrated late next month…  the 1954 boys’ state title won by the Indians in the “no-class” hoops days.  70th anniversary festivities are set for March 23rd in Milan.  Some of the actors from the movie “Hoosiers,” which was based on the championship run, will be there, there’ll be all kinds of food and merchandise, and the Milan ’54 Museum will be open for you to re-live, or live for the first time, the “Milan Miracle.”  It all starts at 11:00 on Saturday morning, the 23rd.

Tonight in men’s college basketball, Xavier hosts Villanova’s Wildcats, and the Crusaders of Valparaiso visit Indiana State’s Sycamores.  Last night, it was Butler losing to number 1 UConn for the second time in a month, 71-62, and the Hoosiers topped Ohio State, 76-73.

In the NBA, not only did the Pacers beat the Rockets 132-129, but the brilliant Tyrese Haliburton has been named a starter in the NBA All-Star game, coming up on Sunday the 18th.
