Jim’s Journal, February 26th, 2024

Hi there, Journal fans!!   I won’t be bringing you an afternoon sportscast on the air today or tomorrow, Tuesday, due to our Reds’ baseball games against the Mariners and the Cubs, but I can try to keep you up with what else is happening in sports, right here.  And thanks to so many of you who are enjoying this new feature on the site.  Some of you have recognized me out in public from the picture, and had nice things to say.  That’s very gratifying, to know you like our work.  So thanks again, and as long as you keep liking it, we’ll keep doing it.

And about the Reds–  after the first couple weekend spring training games, they’re looking good!  Saturday they blanked the Cleveland Guardians 4-0, and Sunday, Cincy topped a split squad of the California Angels, 9-4.  This afternoon, the Reds are a split squad themselves, facing the Mariners at 3:05, and the Brewers at 3:10.  We have the Seattle game on the air for you this afternoon, with pregame coverage at 2:50, on your Reds station, 103.9 FM, WRBI.

We’ve gotten word about a couple local high school athletes who got to take part in the state swim meet over the weekend, and what they achieved.  One of them is Oldenburg Academy freshman Nash King.  In the first swim finals of his high school career, Nash stroked his way to a 14th-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle race.  Nice way to start!

And the right way to wrap a career up as well…  This weekend senior Dylan Thomas became the first 3-time state swim finalist in Milan High School history.  Dylan finished 16th in the 100-yard backstroke, his time 52.63 seconds.  Everyone at Milan High says Congrats to Dylan on an incredible career in the pool for the Indians, and they’re all very proud of him!

Wrestler Mason Parris of Lawrenceburg continues to impress the globe on Team USA.  Mason’s now 24 years old, and competes in the 125-kilogram class, around 275 pounds.  He captured a gold medal over the weekend, in Acapulco, Mexico.   Parris shut out his initial opponent, Canadian Richard Deschatelets, 10-0.  That set Parris up for the title, and his newest gold medal!  Team USA dominated throughout the finals, going 10 for 10, the Americans racking up a perfect score of 250 points, with Mason and 6 American teammates all earning the gold.  In his high school days, Parris won 3 statewide titles, graduating with a record of 206 & 1.  Over his final 3 high school years, he was an unbeaten 152 and 0.  Congratulations again to Mason Parris and the rest of Team USA.
