Here are some Indiana athletes’ latest achievements at the Paris Olympics…
Swimmer Anna Peplowski, a rising IU senior, became the 3rd Hoosier to earn a medal this year, and the first woman from the university to do so. She helped the US women’s 4 x 200-meter freestyle swim team take the silver Thursday afternoon. Even though Anna didn’t swim the final, she was part of the relay squad and was in some of the preliminaries, so yes she gets a medal. She led Indiana to its first Big 10 swim championship since 2019 and was the university’s female athlete of the year for ’23-’24.
Chris Guiliano of Notre Dame didn’t do as well in his 5th and last event of the Games as he had earlier, finishing 17th in the 50-meter freestyle, when only the top 16 went on to the semi-finals. But Chris had won gold in the men’s 4 x 100-meter relay last weekend.
Also swimming is 17-year-old Alex Shackell from Carmel, who won silver earlier in the week on the women’s 4 x 200- meter relay team.
Notre Dame grad Lee Kiefer, who’d already taken gold as the best women’s fencer with an individual foil in hand, now has a second gold medal, as the USA team has also won the team foil event, topping Italy in the finals.
Carmel native Rajeev Ram and Alex Krajicek are up for a gold medal match in men’s doubles tennis. They knocked off a Czech team in straight sets in the semis, 6-2, 6-2, and will play for the gold Saturday. Ram won silver in mixed doubles at Tokyo, partnered up with Venus Williams.
The Reds get back on the diamond tonight, welcoming the Giants to the Ballpark after getting smoked by the Cubs 13-4 Wednesday. It’ll be a City Connect night, with Martin Luther King III throwing out the ceremonial first pitch and being honored on the field. Also, pitcher Brent Suter and former Reds outfielder Chris Dickerson will be recognized for running a community sustainability event. Join us for the broadcast beginning at 6:40, on the Sports Voice, 103.9 WRBI.
Remember there’s one more “Overtime,” coming up Monday evening. That’s when Terrance Arney and Leon Smith will have a conversation with Dave Werner, from University of Florida Athletics. Overtime, 6:00 Monday, right here.
