Janet Rose (Scudder) Black, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and local legend, passed away on June 30, 2025, in Downeyville, Indiana — the town she loved and spent her entire life.
Known for her quick wit, fierce loyalty, and unapologetic sass, Janet was truly one of a kind. She married John Black at 18 and together they raised three children: Terry (Jenny), Kerry (Terry), and Stacy (Mike). She also leaves behind her sister Shirley, friends, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She lived loudly and loved even louder, surviving on Pepsi and sarcasm. Her humor was unmatched, her stories unforgettable, and her spirit impossible to contain.
Janet is now reunited in heaven with her husband John; parents Margaret and Russell Scudder; and her siblings Jake, Kenny, and Vivian. Janet leaves behind a family full of laughter, love, and slightly inappropriate one-liners that will echo through generations. She was Downeyville Royalty, and our hearts ache without her.
Janet will be remembered as the funny storyteller with a lot of love for her family and for showing us the strength to keep going when times are tough. In her honor, stir a pot, love your people hard, and don’t be afraid to say something wildly inappropriate. She wouldn’t have had it any other way.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, July 8, 2025 at the Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home from 11:00 am until the time of the funeral service at 1:00 pm. Burial will follow at the Star Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the family through the funeral home. Online condolences can be made to the family at www.gilliland-howe.com.
