ISP investigating Jennings County Jail inmate’s death

NORTH VERNON, IN — Detectives from the Indiana State Police-Versailles Post were called Thursday morning to investigate the death of an inmate at the Jennings County Jail.

Shortly after 7:30 am, Corrections Officers with the Jennings County Sheriff’s Office found 35-year-old Sandra Ray of North Vernon unresponsive in her cell.

Corrections Officers immediately began providing medical assistance and requested EMS personnel but were unable to revive Ray.

The Jennings County Coroner responded and pronounced her dead.

The Jennings County Sheriff’s Office asked ISP to investigate the death.

Ray was jailed on an Operating While Intoxicated charge following her arrest Tuesday evening. State Police say she was housed in a cell by herself and was the only person in her cell at the time of her death.

Results of the autopsy and toxicology results are pending. However, foul play is not suspected and the investigation is ongoing.
