The Hoosier State Relay Qualifiers from the Pirate Track and Field teams traveled to IU Bloomington Saturday afternoon to compete against the top 24 competitors from across the State of Indiana’s small schools (Football Class 1A-3A).
Senior Lily Grimes was crowned the 2019 Indoor State Champion of Shot Put after she threw her career best of 42’7″, a new indoor SCHOOL RECORD. Grimes is no stranger to the podium at the Indoor State Meet. She has been a medalist in all 4 of her appearances at HSR finishing 5th or 6th in the past . Grimes was seeded 2nd this indoor season behind last year’s shot put champion. However, by throwing her best indoor series of her high school career, Grimes took the lead with her third throw of 42′.5″ in trials. After advancing to finals, Grimes continued to dominate and solidified her win as the State Champ with her toss of 42’7″. Grimes’ championship performance put the Lady Pirates on the score board finishing in 13th place out of 42 scoring teams.
Other competitors for the Greensburg girls included 14th place Distance Medley Relay Team of Emily Mangels, Sophie Nobbe, Emma Hatton and Brenner Hanna, 16th place 3200 meter relay team of Mangels, Emma Wilmer, Hatton and Nobbe and 22nd place Hanna in the 3200. Mangels, Hatton and Nobbe all ran career best split relay times while Wilmer ran a season best split relay time.
On the boys team, Daimon Austin qualified for HSR in long jump. He improved on his original seed by 2 spots and placed 17th overall with a leap of 19’9″.
The Pirates Track and Field teams will be back in action when they start their outdoor season at home next Thursday against Batesville.
