Hubert “Hugh” Chambers, 85, Greensburg

Hubert “Hugh” Chambers, 85, Greensburg, Indiana, passed away on Sunday, January 7, 2024, at his home with his family by his side. Born August 31, 1938, in Prairie Creek, Indiana, he was the son of Warren and Ethel (Butler) Chambers. Hugh graduated from Prairie Creek High School. After high school Hugh went on to serve his country in the United States Army. He then went on to work as an Indiana State Police Officer until his retirement at the age of 55. After his retirement he furthered his interest in photography and became very well known in the Decatur County area for his photographic skills and knowledge. Hugh captured many special moments for families over the years. From senior pictures to weddings he served families for multiple generations. Hugh was an active member of the First Baptist Church. He served as a past deacon and sang in the church choir. Hugh married his middle school sweetheart, Jewell R. Lawson on June 15, 1958, and from their love story came two sons: Rick and Gary Chambers. Hugh and Jewell were together until her death in 2019. Some would say Hugh never truly got over the loss of his one true love, but he was able to fill his time with his family and friends. His grandchildren and great grandchildren truly held a special place in his heart.

Hugh is survived by his sons: Rick (Lisa) Chambers of Greensburg, Gary (Lisa) Chambers of Greensburg; six grandchildren: Erica (Keith) Kramer, Jessica Sanchez, Derek (Matison Baker) Chambers, Megan (Dani) Davidson, Katelyn Chambers, Kristen Chambers; 6 great grandchildren: Amare and Kyrie Kramer, Nora, Liam, and Eli Sanchez, and Prentice Chambers.

Hugh is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jewell; brother, Leroy Chambers; sisters: Carol Sullivan and Gail Paton.

A graveside service will be held for family and friends on Thursday, January 11, 2024, starting at 11:30am at South Park Cemetery in Greensburg. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to The Rock Bible Church in Greensburg or to an organization of the donor’s choice.
