Helen M. Wandling, age 74 of Greensburg and formerly of New Point, died Tuesday, July 12, 2016 at St. Francis Hospital in Indianapolis. She is the adopted daughter of Hilda (Nee: Amberger) and Lester Barnhorst. She worked as a waitress for 30 years, also drove for Rush Delivery several years and retired from CVS as a cashier after 13 years.
Helen loved having family around and was usually the life of the party according to her family. An avid bingo player, she was equally fond of playing cards and was a member of the Canasta Club at the Greensburg Senior Center. Other interests included playing the piano, singing and going dancing. If the Belairs were playing anywhere in the area, she was in attendance. She was a league bowler for many years, went Thursday nights with friends out to dinner and then a movie, liked watching “detective shows” as she called them, especially Law & Order and was a fan of video games with Tetris among her favorites. Helen enjoyed going out to eat, which her family teased was a good thing. Apparently her cooking skills didn’t have anybody beating her door down at supper time.
She is survived by daughters and son-in-laws Deb and Luke Prickel of Batesville, Marla and Mark Burgess of Princeton, Indiana, Jen and Brian Jenkins of Brookville, Indiana; sons and daughter-in-laws John and Kathy Peterson of Indianapolis, Bob and Anna Peterson, Paul and Mary Peterson, Jimmy and Brenda Peterson, all of New Point, Indiana, Donnie and Rita Heldman of Indianapolis; sister Barbara Ralsten of Quail Creek, Arizona; eighteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren. In recent years she was able to reconnect with her birth brother Frank Rumple of Sullivan, Indiana and sisters Elizabeth (Betty) Kennedy, Shirley Baker and Cathy Hayes, all of Indianapolis. Her husband Ben Hardin also survives. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by husbands James Peterson and Eugene Wandling.
Visitation is Friday, July 15th, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home. Funeral services follow at 1 p.m. with Rev. R.T. Stringer officiating with burial in the Rossburg Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family.
