Harold W. Spurlock, 71

Harold W. Spurlock, 71 of Laurel passed away on Thursday, August 20, 2026, while surrounded by his loving family. He was born on February 7, 1955, in Connersville to James C. Spurlock and Esther Smith Spurlock, he was their 11th child out of 12.

He was a 1973 graduate of Laurel High School.

On June 16, 1973, in Laurel he married Mary Rayburn; together they were blessed with twin daughters, Malissa and Malena.

Harold began his career with Design and Manufacturing in 1973 and continued until 1990. In 1990, he began a new chapter as an agent for Farm Bureau, a career he enjoyed for 30 years before retiring in 2020.

He was a 25-year member of Oshawnee Tribe No. 220. In 1983, he became a member of Laurel Masonic Lodge No. 447, F. & A.M., obtaining the Scottish Rite 32nd Degree. He was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Harold formerly served with the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department and was a certified EMT. In 1981 he graduated from the Indiana Police Academy, he then went on to become the Laurel Town Marshal. His commitment to his community also included serving on the Franklin County School Board for four terms. Harold held a special place in his heart for young people and spent time coaching Babe Ruth Baseball. Over the years, he not only coached but sponsored many teams; he was always happy to support the local youth and give back to his community.

From the early years as a Boy Scout, Harold developed a deep appreciation for nature and the outdoors. He especially enjoyed hiking and took on the challenge of hiking the Appalachian Trial, completing more than 100 miles before his illness prevented him from continuing. The outdoors remained a special part of his life and reflected his adventurous and determined spirit.

Above all, he treasured his family. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. His laughter filled the home with joy, and the memories, stories and love he shared will continue to bring comfort to those who knew him best.

Along with his loving wife of 53 years he is survived by his daughters, Malissa (Mike) Spurlock Hohenstein and Malena (Brian) Spurlock Crowe; his grandchildren, Grant and Garrett Crowe, Sophia, Kate and John Hohenstein; his brothers, Walter (Beulah) Spurlock, Roy Spulock, Burton Spurlock, Delbert (Kay) Spurlock and Ronald Clyde (Nancy) Spurlock; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Edna Baker and Lorene Arrington and his brothers, Carl, Ernest and Mike Spurlock.

The Spurlock family extends heart felt gratitude for the prayers, support and condolences during this difficult time.

Family and friends may visit on Friday, August 28, 2026, from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm at Urban Winkler Funeral Home, 513 W. 8th St., Connersville. A masonic service will begin at 1:00 pm with Laurel Masonic Lodge No. 447. A funeral service will then begin at the funeral home with Pastor Dereck Fields of Taylor Chapel UMC, Fort Wayne, Indiana. Burial will follow in Laurel North Cemetery.
