Harland Delap, 91, of Elrod passed away at 3:40pm Sunday, October 9, 2016 at Ripley Crossing in Milan. He was born near Dillsboro on December 31, 1924 the son of Raymond and Rubie May Delap. He was married to Emalene Brandt on May 9, 1953 and she preceded him in death on June 15, 2010. Survivors include two daughters Debra (Lee) Cutter and Darlene (Martin) Ruehl both of Versailles; four special grandsons Derek Cutter, Casey, Brandon, and Andy Ruehl. Mr. Delap was a 1943 graduate of Milan High School. He was a Navy Veteran of WWII enlisting on July 17, 1944 and serving on the USS LST 876. For his service to his country Harland received the American Area Ribbon, WWII Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal, and the Asiatic Pacific Area Ribbon with one star. In civilian life Mr. Delap worked for 33 years in maintenance at the Jefferson Proving Ground retiring in 1984. Harland was a member of St. Peters Lutheran Church in Dillsboro, the Ripley County 40 & 8, and Versailles American Legion. He served as treasurer for Branch 8041 of the Lutheran Brotherhood for 30 years. He had also served on the Washington Township Advisory Board and always played an active part in the Democrat party in Washington Township. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 13th at 11am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Keith Allhands officiating. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles with military honors by the Versailles American Legion. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5pm to 8pm. Memorials may be given to the Friendship Fire Department or St. Peters Lutheran Church in care of the funeral home.
