Greensburg cross-country runners T.J. Gorman and Alaina Bedel represented the Pirates at the IHSAA State Cross-Country Championships Saturday afternoon, finishing 43rd and 143rd, respectively.
In the boys’ competition, Brebeuf Jesuit’s Cameron Todd was the individual champion running in 14:55.5 for 5000m.
Carmel had three All-State individuals and won the team title by over 100 pts.
Gorman set a new personal best on the LaVerne Gibson Course in Terre Haute running 15:53.3. After the first km of the race, Gorman was 74th overall. He moved up steadily over the last four kilometers of the race to place 43rd out of 250 competitors. He finishes his high school career ranked eighth all-time in school history with his state meet time.
“It was a pleasure to see T.J. develop into such a successful runner over the last 4 years,” Coach Troy Davis said. “His race was an outstanding way to finish his senior season.”
Indian Creek’s Libby Dowty was the State Championship in the girls’ meet. She led the race throughout, running 17:06.7 for the victory. Homestead edged Ft. Wayne Concordia Lutheran 108-115 for the win in the team competition.
Bedel lowered her personal best for the 4th meet in a row. The freshman broke 20:00 for the second consecutive race. Her overall time was 19:46.4, which earned her 143rd place overall. Bedel concluded her freshman year as the sixth-fastest time in school history.
“Alaina had an excellent race this afternoon,” Davis said. “She showed a lot of grit and determination. I’m excited to see her improve and compete in the years to come.”
