(Batesville, IN) – Paul Gates announced at Monday night’s Batesville City Council meeting that he is retiring as Clerk-Treasurer, effective December 31.

Gates was first elected to office in 2015, and is serving his third term.

His successor will be chosen at a Republican Party caucus – the date and time for that hasn’t been announced.

Gates says he plans to help the new Clerk-Treasurer during the transition, and will remain a Batesville resident after he leaves office.

The Clerk-Treasurer department’s duties are two-fold, according to the City of Batesville’s website.

As Treasurer, the department is responsible for the overall financial well-being of the City, including annual budget preparation, monthly and annual financial reporting, invoice payment, capital asset funding needs, project financial analysis, payroll, and various tax preparation and reporting functions.

As Clerk, the office maintains all City meeting minutes, personnel files, employee benefit programs, contracts and vehicle registrations and titles.

It’s important to note that in Indiana, the Clerk-Treasurer is on an equal level with the Mayor and the City Council.

This segregation of power is designed to ensure that checks and balances are in place to provide residents with a fair and equitable government.

“I report to the residents of Batesville,” Gates writes on the Clerk-Treasurer’s page on the city’s website.
