(Batesville, IN) – The final numbers have been tallied.
Sales of Cherry Thing-A-Lings at Schmidt Bakery in Batesville were down from last year’s record-setting pace.
Twenty thousand, eight hundred and eight dozen were sold between pre-orders and in-store purchases last weekend.
That’s down from the 21,240 dozen sold a year ago.
Rainy and snowy weather Saturday and Sunday kept a number of people from lining up outside the bakery for in-store purchases.
A total of 249,969 of the fritter-type donut filled with cherries and topped with a cherry glaze were made this year, which means some were still available at the bakery as of Wednesday morning.
Clem and Bertie Schmidt started what has become a tasty Presidents Day weekend tradition in the 1970s, in a nod to the tale of George Washington chopping down a cherry tree.
