(Cross Plains, IN) – Several departments responded to a house fire on the 94-hundred block of South State Road 129 in Ripley County’s Cross Plains community late Friday morning.
The Friendship Volunteer Fire Department says flames and heavy smoke were showing from the rear of a single-story ranch home when they arrived.
While the fire was knocked down relatively quickly, the house and its contents sustained significant damage.
The residents were able to escape without injury after smoke detectors alerted them to the fire, but one of the family’s pets perished in the blaze.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The family is receiving assistance from the Red Cross.
Versailles Fire Rescue, Ripley County EMS, the Ripley County Sheriff’s Office, Southeastern Indiana REMC and INDOT provided assistance at the scene.
“Be sure to check those smoke detectors, they save lives. Finally, keep this family in your thoughts and prayers as they work through this devastating loss,” the Friendship Volunteer Fire Department wrote in a statement on social media.
