Dr. David Charles Harp, Sr., age 76, of Greensburg, Indiana passed away on June 26, 2020, at his home surrounded by family and close friends.
He was born on August 9, 1943 in Fulton, New York to George and Sylvia (Hine) Harp. He grew up in Minetto, New York and attended Oswego High School. He went on to receive his bachelor’s degree from the University of Buffalo, in New York, and his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Lincoln Chiropractic College in Indianapolis, Indiana.
In 1971, David moved to Greensburg and started his career as a chiropractor, with his first office in the G.C. Murphy Building on the downtown square. In addition to his office in Greensburg, he had an office in Kokomo, Indiana for many years. David was named “Chiropractor of the Year” numerous times in both offices. David’s son, Jason, followed in his father’s footsteps, and, after graduating from Life Chiropractic College, he joined his father in the Kokomo office where Jason still practices today.
David established Family Chiropractic Centers of America and assisted many newly graduated chiropractors with starting offices around the state. His career as a chiropractor, which was also his life-long passion, continued for 47 years, until he retired in 2017. He never looked at chiropractic as a job. He loved going to work, and he took great pride in helping his many patients throughout the years. David’s close friend, and business partner, David Brewster, once said, “If one were to open up David Harp’s head, a spine would fall out!”.
In addition to chiropractic, David enjoyed many other interests and hobbies throughout his life, such as, metal-detecting, birdwatching, planting trees, debating philosophically, playing Blackjack, relaxing on the beaches of Lake Michigan and reading books on a wide variety of topics. He was also a huge lover of food, and he particularly enjoyed banana cream pie, the fish sandwich from Rudy’s in New York, hot dogs from Heid’s of Liverpool, NY and, pretty much, every bakery he stumbled upon.
David was a compassionate, kind-spirited person, who was always happy to help someone in need. He was outgoing and never knew a stranger. He loved life and enjoyed each day to the fullest. When someone would ask him how he was doing, his most likely response was a cheery “Near perfect!”
David was preceded in death by his parents. David was married to Ginger (Brown), his best friend, and she survives him. He is also survived by his children: David (Jenny) Harp, Jr., Noblesville, IN; Jason (Holly) Harp, Noblesville, IN; Carrie Grenier, Indianapolis, IN; Heather (Justin) Halverson, Indianapolis, IN; Sarah (Casey) Enstrom, Bruceville, Texas; Laura Beth (Chris) Walker, Plainfield, IN; Kelsi (Austin) Matherly, Terre Haute, IN; Bobby Brown, Greensburg, IN, 21 ½ grandchildren, and his beloved four-legged partner in crime, Mollie Rue.
David will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and he will forever live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
David’s family sends their heartfelt thanks to Courtney, Robin, Jimmy, and others from Our Hospice of South Central Indiana for all you have done for David; Chris Derflinger, Scott Chasteen and the Greensburg EMT’s for your help bringing him home; and to Brian, Michelle, and Sierra Lang for lovingly help to care for David.
Visitation for family and friends, observing CDC precautions, will be held on Tuesday, June 30, 2020 from 4 to 7:00 p.m. at the Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home in Greensburg, Indiana.
