(Greensburg, IN) – Decatur County Memorial Hospital (DCMH) is proud to announce its recent donation of Guardian Caps for the Greensburg Community High School football program, marking a significant step toward improving player safety and reducing the risk of head injuries.
This investment underscores DCMH’s commitment to protecting young athletes and promoting safer sports practices in our community.
Guardian Caps are soft-shell helmet covers engineered to reduce impact forces by up to 33%, according to the manufacturer. Used by over 5,000+ high schools, 500+ colleges, and all 32 NFL teams in practices, these caps have become a game-changer in football safety and were mandated for the NFL’s 2024 contact practices and permitted to be worn in games. By absorbing and dissipating the force of collisions, Guardian Caps help minimize the severity of impact to the head, which can reduce the likelihood of concussions and long-term brain trauma.*
“As a neurosurgical team, we are dedicated to serving our community and providing the highest level of care when injuries do occur. However, our greatest hope is that young athletes can stay safe and healthy, avoiding the kinds of head injuries that can have lasting effects,” said Dr. Kushal Shah, Goodman Campbell Brain and Spine Neurosurgeon at DCMH. “Preventative measures in sports are essential, and we fully support efforts that prioritize student safety and well-being.”
“The health and safety of our community’s student-athletes is a top priority,” said Rex McKinney, President/CEO of DCMH. “By providing Guardian Caps, we’re helping Greensburg Community High School create a safer environment on the field, protecting players from the cumulative effects of possible repeated impacts.”
“Player safety is our top priority, and we’re incredibly grateful for the generous support from Decatur County Memorial Hospital,” said Tom Hunter, Greensburg Community Schools Superintendent. “Football is a tough, physical sport, but with tools like Guardian Caps, we can take meaningful steps to protect our athletes from unnecessary risks. This investment from DCMH will help our team stay healthy and on the field, competing at their best.”

Guardian Caps are lightweight, one-size-fits-all helmet covers made with an impact-reducing material that attaches easily to standard football helmets. The caps are designed to reduce the force of helmet-to-helmet and helmet-to-body impacts, lowering the overall exposure to repetitive head trauma. Their adoption at every level of play highlights the growing emphasis on player safety across the sport.*
