GREENSBURG, IN — The Greensburg Optimist Club presented the 2022 James E. Greiwe Memorial Optimist of the Year Award Thursday morning to John and Adele Corya.

John Corya is a local farmer who was a charter member of the Decatur County Community Foundation’s board of directors, served on the Decatur County Family YMCA and Decatur County Memorial Hospital boards, and is active with the Greensburg Community Bread of Life.

“I had no idea that I was coming here this morning to receive this,” he said. “I appreciate it very much that they recognized me but I really did all of this because of my love for the community.”

John’s wife Adele helped start the parish meal for grieving families after funerals at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and the St. Mary’s Hot Meal Program in which dozens of meals are delivered each Sunday around Greensburg.

“She’s been an indispensable part of my life and I couldn’t live without her,” John Corya said.

The Coryas were presented the Optimist of the Year Award by members of the Greiwe family.

The late Jim Greiwe received the first Optimist of the Year Award in 1977 and was posthumously honored in 1978.
